Australians with compatible mobile phones, tablets and smartwatches were sent a national AusAlert test message on Monday 27 July 2026.
The government says the test was designed to check the new emergency-warning system before its planned launch in October. AusAlert is intended to deliver location-based warnings during events such as bushfires, floods, storms and other serious threats.
The test message required no action. Some people may not have received it because of device compatibility, software settings, network coverage or their location at the time. The official AusAlert website provides troubleshooting information and a list of supported devices.
A national system can improve the speed and reach of urgent public warnings, but no single channel is perfect. Emergency services continue to advise people to use multiple information sources, including local radio, official apps and agency websites, particularly during fast-moving events.
What to check now
Users should keep device software updated, confirm emergency-alert settings are enabled and visit the official AusAlert site rather than relying on screenshots shared online. The test is also a reminder to review household emergency plans before the next severe-weather or fire season.
